Hello!

Kiki Smith | Fine Art Prints

Hello!

Thank you so much for your interest in my work! Your purchase helps me to continue making art, and best of all: gets my work off the internet and into people's hands.

About Me
_

My name is Kim and I'm a fine art photographer based in Portland, OR.

Though I was raised by a painter, I've spent my life enamoured by the photograph. I always attribute this fascination to growing up poor and having but a handful of physical images to remind me of the first decade+ of my life. When I was 16 years old someone showed me how to use an old 35mm camera and it literally changed my life (thanks, Ban!).

As a result of the past and present times I've become especially drawn to the nature of Polaroid. I've gone from having practically no photos of my childhood, to having thousands of photos on my phone that I never really look at. I find it truly amazing that with a Polaroid camera I can push one button and be rewarded with a tangible keepsake; a moment frozen in time that I get to stuff under my pillow for safekeeping.

The resulting photos are often soft-focused, dreamy and imperfect, just like the memories they were born of.

About My Art
_

While I've been shooting instant film since 2011, and other film mediums much longer, my first real Polaroid adventure had me road tripping around Iceland with friends in 2013. I was so captivated by the wild, stark and serene landscapes all around us and a calling to simpler times with palpable treasures.

Since then I've been fortunate enough to go on many more adventures with my arsenal of film cameras and dear friends in tow.

About The Process
_

All photos for sale are photographed on a variety of cameras spanning from Polaroid (both integral and peel apart), Rolleiflex 2.8C, 35mm and full frame digital.

Polaroid and other film photos are scanned into my computer at an extremely high resolution, which is what allows me to sell 20x20" enlargements of an image that is 3x3" in real life.

When I upscale to this size you are also able to more clearly see the artifacts that help make Polaroid what it is - bloomed chemicals, undeveloped patches and cracks in the formula - all of which add to the charm and painterly effect of the medium.

Part of this digitization includes cleaning up fuzz and dust specks from the scans, so any markings on your prints are part of the original image and meant to be there. Please join me in embracing these imperfections!
